36th Annual Walleye Derby - Latest News

May 20, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US-Canadian border is closed to passenger rail, passenger ferry travel and pleasure boat travel to all non-essential citizens of both countries, until 11:59PM, June 22nd, 2020. It may be amended or rescinded prior to that time, based on circumstances associated with the specific threat or lack thereof. (link included below for reference from the US DHS official documentation page 5) In accordance with this mandate the Southtowns Walleye Association of WNY, Inc. Annual Derby will be observing all rules and laws set forth by both countries and in accordance with our previously published rules (#10 specifically in our rule package, see link below) Therefore based on the current Federal and Provincial mandates, we will not be accepting Canadian participants to fish the Derby at this time. Conversely we are not allowing participants of the derby to enter and/or fish in Canadian waters. Our Derby begins at 12:01 am, June 13th 2020 and all rules and laws that are in place at the time of startup will be in effect and maintained throughout the Derby until its close at 4pm on June 21st, regardless of any changes to border openings during the course of the event, this ensures a consistent and measured approach in maintaining the highest level of ethics and standards for our club and our participants while fishing. It is expected that all of our participants will continue to exhibit the best in sportsman like conduct on and off of the water and observing all applicable rules and laws. We look forward to seeing all of you signing up at the club and fishing on the water. If border restrictions are lifted on or before June 10th, we will vacate all above restrictive policies.

The STWA Derby Committee.

April 26, 2020

Our derby committee has been in constant contact with each other planning via email and by phone over the past several weeks. Most recently we met on Thursday, April 23, 2020 and discussed the various issues surrounding COVID-19 and the impacts it could or could not have in regards to our Annual Walleye Derby. We have spoken to other fishing event leaders around the area to obtain their schedules and thoughts and what they have learned as well. We felt having these valuable discussions and insights will help us to determine the best course of action for our specific event and our club.

We determined based on these discussions that observing social distancing guidelines along with keeping the health of our participants and volunteers be given the top most consideration. Additionally we discussed the valued sponsors that make our event so special and their capacity to support us during this challenging time.

After weighing all of these topics the committee took a vote to determine the next course of action for our event. We are pleased to announce that we will be moving forward with our event in 2020, with modifications being made to accommodate the current COVID-19 situation and NYS guidance requiring the use of masks and social distancing.

We realize that many of our participants may have questions in regards to what those modifications will be. Currently we are looking at modifying our weigh station protocols to meet all current guidance and to offer a level of comfort to everyone. As those plans become more concrete we will communicate them to you in a timely fashion over the next week. If the state of New York changes their guidance or changes the current rules in regards to any marinas or closures then we will follow those guidelines as prescribed by local authorities.

With that said, we are actively encouraging everyone to get out and fish, enjoy the outdoors and of course be safe. Please go to our website at www.southtowswalleye.com/derby-signup  and sign up or for those of you who have received our mailing we ask you to fill it out and get back to us with your entry and membership renewal and lastly you can come to the club in the coming weeks to sign-up in person, we will announce those dates in the coming days. For in person sign-ups we will be allowing only two people in the club at any given time at a safe distance from each other, while others must wait in their vehicles outside the building.

Lastly the derby would like to reach out to the masses for weigh station volunteers, we have an online sign-up for the derby weigh stations located at station sign-up and ask that if you can please help us to provide a great derby experience for everyone. As we stated we will be following new rules in regards to social distancing requirements that will be mandatory at all stations, regardless of location.

We look forward to getting our lives, our club and our fishing back to normal, again stay tuned for more updates in the coming days but in the meantime take advantage of one of these online, mail or in-person opportunities to sign-up.

January 2, 2020

We are well on our way in our planning process for the 36th Annual Walleye Derby. Our committee has been meeting regularly and have started to make some great progress in getting this years event details in place.

Our new electronic sign-ups are now active at the club, this new system was developed to help streamline the process for anyone joining the club and the derby at our monthly events. We have basically eliminated the need to fill out forms by hand. We now have the ability to get you signed up faster and tie in your membership electronically with the derby entry and print out your slip right on the spot. The new system will enable us to be able to quickly give our derby team up to the minute updates as we get closer to the event for total entries, more accurate records and a new updated contact database, all this to better serve you our valued membership.

Additionally this new system will give our staff the ability to be completely portable for pop-up sign-ups throught the next few months at various locations. At the end of the derby we will also save time in tallying the results and reduce the amount of work required to track fish, weights, and times.

Check back here often for the latest derby news, until then...
