HAMBURG, N.Y., – June 28, 2020 – Southtowns Walleye Association of Western New York Inc. (STWA)  (www.southtownswalleye.org) held its 36th Annual Walleye Derby from June 13th through June 21st  2020, on the waters of Lake Erie and the Upper Niagara River despite the negative impacts this year due to COVID-19 and the current border closure. The organization was able to overcome these obstacles and safely and cleanly provide participants with adequate social distancing for in-person sign-ups, extended online registrations and safe weigh-in stations. With over $100,000 in cash and prizes at stake, over 870 anglers from across NY, PA and Ohio took part in this nine day event to claim the top prize for the heaviest walleye caught. This annual contest is the largest amateur fishing derby on Lake Erie and begins the big summer event season for all anglers on the waterways.

The Derby concluded with a virtual awards ceremony in order to meet social distancing guidelines on June 28th at 11am, prizes were awarded to the top 200 fish that were weighed in for this big fishing event. Top ten honors for the winners went to the adult and youth participants within each division as follows:

(STWA) (www.southtownswalleye.org) held its milestone 35th Annual Walleye Derby from June 8th through June 16th 2019, on the waters of Lake Erie and the Upper Niagara River. With over $100,000 in cash and prizes at stake, over 905 anglers gathered from as far away as the states of Florida and Washington to take part in this nine day event to claim the top prize for the heaviest walleye caught. This annual contest is the largest amateur fishing derby on Lake Erie and begins the big summer event season for all anglers on the waterways.

The Derby concluded with an awards ceremony that was held at the STWA Clubhouse on June 29th at 4pm with more than 250 people in attendance, prizes were awarded to the top 200 fish that were weighed in for this big fishing event. Top ten honors for the winners went to the adult and youth participants within each division as follows:

  “Once again we are holding our Bounty Fish contest, offering a $10,000 reward for the first walleye to be weighed in over 13 lbs. and it is sponsored by the Stahlka Insurance Agency from Western New York. Each month some great early bird prizes will be awarded at the club to several lucky people who get signed up for the derby early and each of the first 500 participants will receive a commemorative cup that can be used for drink specials leading up to the derby awards ceremony.  HAMBURG, N.Y., – February 22, 2018 – Southtowns Walleye Association of Western New York Inc. (SWA) (www.southtownswalleye.org) held its annual Harry A. Smith installation dinner for its Officers and Board of Directors. The organization which boasts over 1,000 members annually supports kids fishing, philanthropic and conservation programs for the Great Lakes region and was instrumental in pushing for the removal of gill netting on Lake Erie, helping to make it the great fishery it is today.

This year’s event took place on February 17, 2018 at Lucarelli’s Banquet Facility located in Lackawanna, NY for the official swearing in of its newly elected officers and board members. It also recognizes various members of the community and the club for outstanding service and dedication to furthering the organization and Great Lakes fishery.

David B. Woodworth former President of Southtowns Walleye Association of Western New York, Inc. presented his final Presidents Awards for 2017 to the following members:
