Memories of a Dear Friend
Maurice James Emerling
01/25/1919 to 07/14/2009
As a somewhat new member of Southtowns Walleye Association, I had occasion to meet Maurice (Maury) no more than a half dozen times. Such meetings were at outdoor oriented functions including those at Southtowns Walleye. He was open to all conversations, and proved to be most interesting on any topic.
Through the years, Maury left his mark all through the Southern Tier in the business world, the financial world, outdoor activities, charities, and the civic world. It seems that everyone knew him. This was best evidenced by the throngs of people who attended the burial mass at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Boston, New York. As I approached Boston, I found myself caught up in a near traffic jam, and considered myself lucky to park a 1Ú2 mile away. At the church, there were probably over 200 people stretched over some 200 yards waiting to be greeted by the immediate Emerling family on the steps of the church.
Here at Southtowns Walleye, Maury left a legacy of support and sponsorship that will be difficult to match. His generosity significantly added to the overall success of our Walleye Tournaments. His presence will be missed at the monthly meetings and at the annual Harry A. Smith Installation and Awards Banquet where Maury and Pearl would put on a demonstration of ballroom dancing. Maurice was always an advocate of youth activities, and this award will preserve his memory in the minds and hearts of the young fisher people for many generations to come !
Maury will always be remembered by the members of Southtowns Walleye for his many years dedication to helping our club become what it is today . . . thanks Maury.
